Edward Leonard O’Neill was born on 12 April 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio USA. Of Irish ancestry, he’s the son of Edward Phillip O’Neill a steel mill worker and truck driver, and Ruth Ann, a homemaker and social worker.
He played football in his youth while attending Ursuline High School, then enrolled at Ohio University on a football scholarship. However, he transferred to Youngstown State University after sophomore year, and again left before the end of his studies to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was cut out in training camp.
He re-joined Youngstown State University, where he studied acting, and his professional acting career began in 1980, with the role of Det. Schreiber in the film “Cruising”. The same year he featured in the action adventure-drama film “The Dogs of War”, and continued his career with minor roles until 1987, when he was chosen for the role of his career as Al Bundy in the TV comedy series “Married…with Children”.
The show aired for 10 seasons, and turned Ed into a star actor, earning him two Golden Globe Award nominations.
