Edward Leonard O’Neill was born on 12 April 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio USA. Of Irish ancestry, he’s the son of Edward Phillip O’Neill a steel mill worker and truck driver, and Ruth Ann, a homemaker and social worker.
He played football in his youth while attending Ursuline High School, then enrolled at Ohio University on a football scholarship. However, he transferred to Youngstown State University after sophomore year, and again left before the end of his studies to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was cut out in training camp.
He re-joined Youngstown State University, where he studied acting, and his professional acting career began in 1980, with the role of Det. Schreiber in the film “Cruising”.
