Who is Charlie Heaton?
Charlie Ross Heaton was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, on 6 February 1994 – his zodiac sign is Aquarius, and he holds British nationality. He’s an actor and a musician, who has appeared in close to 20 movies and TV series, perhaps known best for his portrayal of Sam Guthrie, one of the main characters in the 2020 action horror mystery movie “The New Mutants”. It was written and directed by Josh Boone, also starred Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams, and follows five mutants who have teamed up in an attempt to escape from a secret facility at which they are being held captive; the movie was nominated for four awards.
Early life and education
Charlie was raised alongside his sister Levi in Leeds, by their mother who prefers to stay away from the media’s attention; Charlie hasn’t mentioned his father, which is why it’s widely believed that he abandoned the family when Charlie was still very young.
He became interested in music before falling in love with acting, and was 16 years old when he joined his first band, the Comanechi, as their drummer. Charlie spent a year touring with them around England, which required him to drop out of high school, but he eventually completed his high school education.
He was then a member of the band Half Loon, and was with them until he launched his acting career in 2014.
Roles in movies
Charlie made his debut film appearance in the 2014 short drama “Life Needs Courage”, and the following year saw him star as Michael Stevens, in the short mystery drama “The Schoolboy”.
Also in 2015, he played the main character Dealer, in his first full-length movie: the biographical crime drama “Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II”. It was written and directed by Ricci Harnett, also starred Nabil Elouahabi and Steven Berkoff, and follows the life of Carlton Leach, an underworld icon; the film was nominated for two awards.
A couple of Charlie’s following roles were in the 2015 drama “Urban & the Shed Crew”, the 2016 mystery drama “As You Are”, in which he starred and which won two of the eight awards for which it was nominated, and the 2016 mystery horror drama “Shut In”.
In 2017, he was cast to play Bowie Character in the short drama “The Performers: Act III”, and the same year saw Charlie play one of the main characters, Billy, in the popular mystery horror drama “Marrowbone”. It was written and directed by Sergio G. Sanchez, also starred George MacKay and Anya Taylor-Joy, and follows four siblings who have to face a strange evil presence residing in their manor; the movie won two of the four awards for which it was nominated.
Two of Charlie’s most recent roles in movies have been in the 2020 drama “No Future”, and the 2021 drama “The Souvenir: Part II”, which won four of the 14 awards for which it was nominated.
Roles in TV series
Charlie has appeared in just five TV serie – he made his debut appearance with his portrayal of Gary McCready in two episodes of the mystery crime drama “DCI Banks” in 2015, and the same year saw him appear in the episode “Changing Tides” of the popular mystery crime drama “Vera”. It stars Brenda Blethyn, Jon Morrison and Riley Jones, and follows Vera Stanhope and her team of detectives who are investigating murders in the north of England; the series has been airing since 2011, and has won two of the 10 awards for which it’s been nominated.
Charlie was then cast to play both Jason Waycott and Luke Dickinson in two episodes of the drama “Casualty” in 2015, and in 2020, he appeared in the episode “Break on Through” of the romantic science fiction drama “Soulmates”.
Since 2016, he has been portraying Jonathan Byers in the critically acclaimed fantasy horror drama “Stranger Things”, created by Ross Duffer and Matt Duffer, and which stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard and Winona Ryder. The series follows a boy who has just disappeared, while his friends and family must now face evil supernatural forces to rescue him; it’s won 83 awards, including seven Primetime Emmys, while it’s been nominated for 216 other awards.
Charlie appeared in a 2017 episode of the documentary series “Beyond Stranger Things”, and could’ve been seen featured in the 2019 TV special “The 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards”.
He has made a guest appearance in an episode of various series, such as “The Timey Wimey Show”, “The Talk” and “Made in Hollywood”.

Charlie has been nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning one in 2017 for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, for “Stranger Things” (shared with colleagues).
He was also nominated for a 2018 Teen Choice Award: Scene Stealer, for his performance in “Stranger Things”.
Wife Natalia Dyer and children
Charlie was once in a relationship with Akiko Matsuura, a Japanese-born British drummer and vocalist, whom Charlie met while they were playing in the same band; in 2014, Akiko gave birth to their son Archie, but Charlie and Akiko split not long after that.
In 2016, Charlie started dating Natalia Dyer, a famous American actress whom he met on the set of the series “Stranger Things”.
They have been together since then, and there are today rumors circulating the internet claiming that Charlie and Natalie have become engaged, and are planning to marry in the first half of 2022, but this hasn’t been confirmed.
As of November 2021, Charlie is in a relationship with Natalia Dyer, hasn’t married, and has a son with his former girlfriend Akiko Matsuura.
Hobbies and other interests
Charlie is quite active on Instagram, and seems to be enjoying the attention which he’s receiving from his close to five million followers; he has uploaded nearly 200 pictures onto the network, most of which have been taken during his everyday life.
He likes to travel, and his acting career has taken him to a couple of European countries, as well as to New York State and California in the USA; his dream travel destination is Kyoto in Japan.
Charlie has three to four training sessions at the gym each week, mostly because it’s important for his acting career to stay in shape.
Late at night, he likes to watch movies starring his favorite actors, Will Smith and Eddie Redmayne, such as “Independence Day”, “I, Robot” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”.
