Early life and education

Holiday was raised in Portland alongside her younger brother, by their father who was a dentist, and who spent some time serving in the US Army, including stationed at Japan’s Kuma Station; their mother was a high school teacher.

Holiday grew up being interested in acting and creative writing, and spent most of her spare time either watching movies or reading books. She matriculated from a local high school in 1982, and then enrolled at the University of Washington, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1986.

Then later, in 1995, Holiday enrolled at University of Iowa’s Writers Workshop, graduating in 1998.

Holiday’s career

In 2002, Holiday wrote and produced the mystery movie “Last Seen”; it was directed by Eva Ilona Brzeski, starred Amanda Detmer, Joe Minjares and Sally Wingert, and follows the disappearance of a high school volleyball player, and a journalist who is reporting on it.

Holiday published her book “Big Cats” in 2005, which received mostly positive reviews, as well as praise from the magazines “Seattle Times”, “Kirkus Reviews” and “Post Magazine”.

She was featured in a 2014 episode of the documentary series “Inside Edition”.

Holiday wrote the 2017 short movie “PUSH”, directed by Justine Bateman, who also starred in it, alongside Nolan Gross and Nicole Gabriella Scipione. It follows a pregnant woman who has given a 12 year-old-boy a ride home.

He’s appeared in close to 100 movies and TV series, while he’s probably known best for his portrayal of Dwight Schrute, one of the lead characters in the critically acclaimed comedy series “The Office”. It was created by Greg Daniels and Ricky Gervais, also starred Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski, and follows several office workers during their typical workdays; the series aired from 2005 to 2013, and won 56 awards, including five Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 195 other awards. Rainn spent the first three years of his life in Seattle, where he was raised by his father Robert G. Wilson who was an artist, novelist and author of the novel “Tentacles of Dawn”, and his mother Shay Cooper, who was an actress and yoga teacher. His parents then divorced, and he moved to Nicaragua with his father and step-mother Kristin, but in 1973 after they had also divorced, Rainn moved back to Seattle with Robert.

He studied at Kellogg Middle School and then at Shcorecrest High School, and was during those years mostly focused on music; Rainn played both the bassoon and clarinet in a school band. He eventually switched to studying at New Trier High School, from which he matriculated in 1984; Rainn then enrolled at Tufts University, and not long after that transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle, from which he graduated in 1986, with a Bachelor’s degree in drama.

He continued his education at New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting in 1988.

Rainn spent nearly an entire decade in theatre prior to launching his career on TV, mostly performing with The Public Theatre, Playwrights Horizons and the Ensemble Studio Theatre.

He made his debut TV series appearance in a 1997 episode of the soap opera “One Life to Live”, and then his debut film appearance in the 1999 adventure science fiction comedy “Galaxy Quest”. Between 2003 and 2005, Rainn portrayed Arthur Martin in the comedy series “Six Feet Under”, created by Alan Ball, and which starred Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall and Frances Conroy. It follows the members of a dysfunctional family who are running a funeral home, and the series won 70 awards, including nine Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 166 other awards.

A couple of Rainn’s other notable performances in the decade were in the 2005 comedy movie “The Life Coach”, the 2007 comedy film “Juno”, and the 2009 action science fiction adventure movie “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.

In 2015, Rainn starred as William Colby in the horror thriller movie “The Boy”, written and directed by Craig William Macneill, and which also starred David Morse and Jared Breeze. It follows a nine-year-old sociopath who’s fascinated by death – the film won one of the five awards for which it was nominated.

Three of Rainn’s most recent roles have been in the  short comedy film “Night Safari”, and the  short comedy podcast series “Middlespace: The Rebels Attack, and Then the Other Side Attacks as Well” both in 2021, and all the six episodes of the 2022 thriller series “Dark Winds”.

He has won 10 of the 22 awards for which he has been nominated, including three Primetime Emmy nominations for his performance in “The Office”.

Rainn is also an author, having published his autobiography “The Bassoon King” in November 2015.
