Jeff Dunham Wiki Bio
Jeffrey Douglas ‘Jeff’ Dunham was born in Dallas, Texas USA, on 18 April 1962 – his zodiac sign is Aries, and he holds American nationality. He’s a stand-up comedian, actor and a ventriloquist, perhaps known best for his ‘Achmed the Dead Terrorist’ acts.
Jeff was raised by the real estate developer Howard Dunham and his homemaker wife Joyce, who adopted Jeff when he was three months old. He became interested in ventriloquism at the age of eight, when he received a Mortimer Snerd dummy as a Christmas gift. By the time he was a teenager, he was determined not only to become a professional ventriloquist, but the best one ever. In sixth grade, he started attending yearly Vent Haven ConVENTions for ventriloquists, which included competitions. Jeff built connections and made a name for himself by attending the event, and was even eventually declared ineligible to compete, due to the fact that he dominated the competition segment every year.
As a teenager, Jeff started performing live in front of audiences, in various venues including church, school and the local Six Flags. He made his TV debut in 1976, when he was interviewed by the news reporter Billy O’Riley, which led to him doing various TV commercials.
In 1985, Jeff joined the Broadway show “Sugar Babies”, alongside Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller, replacing a variety act. In the following year, he graduated from Baylor University with a degree in communications, and continued performing his acts at comedy clubs, however, he was not well received by fellow comedians, who at the time showed little respect for ventriloquism.
Two years later, Jeff moved to Los Angeles, California in an attempt to further his comedy career. He soon started performing regularly at The Comedy & Magic Club, where he met many famous comedians, such as Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Engvall, and refined his jokes towards more mature themes. In 1990, he achieved his goal of appearing in “The Tonight Show”, and the exposure he gained from his time on the show led him to appear in several TV series and commercials. Although he maintained a solid career by performing in clubs, his TV appearances became less frequent by the late 1990’s.
This changed in 2003, when Jeff started performing his acts on Comedy Central, showcasing characters such as Walter, Peanut, and Melvin the Superhero Guy. In 2007, he appeared on Larry the Cable Guy’s movie “Delta Farce”, and also released his own special entitled “Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity”, in which he introduced his perhaps most controversial character, Achmed the Dead Terrorist – a skeletal corpse of a suicide bomber, which Jeff uses to satirize the scare of terrorism which became prevalent in the US following the 9/11 attacks. The character instantly became an Internet sensation, and a clip from the special gained more than 140 million views on YouTube in the span of few months.
This introduced Jeff to a mainstream audience, and he started performing in arenas in front of tens of thousands of people – something that was previously deemed an unimaginable feat for a ventriloquist.
In the following years, he made guest appearances on popular TV series “30 Rock”, “Sonny With a Chance”, and “Dinner for Schmucks”, and released five more comedy specials.
Jeff is known for making all of the dummies he uses for his acts, and also has a large collection of antique ones, which includes The Umpire, a 6ft tall mechanized dummy built in 1941. He also collects muscle cars, and is a proud owner of the original Batmobile, used in the 1989 movie “Batman”.
In 2010, he published his autobiography “All By My Selves: Walter, Peanut, Achmed and Me”, in which he revealed previously unknown details about his career.
Jeff is 59 years old. He has short dark brown hair and blue eyes, is 6ft (1.8m) tall, and weighs around 170lbs (77kgs).
As of January 2022, his net worth is estimated at more than $140 million.
