Born Charles Matthew Hunnam on 10 April 1980 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear England, he is the son of Jane Bell and William Hunnam. He and his older brother William were raised by their mother, who later remarried and gave birth to Charlie’s two younger half-brothers.

He was expelled from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Penrith, Cumbria after he fought his classmates, and was forced to take exams from home. After matriculation, he studied performing arts at the Cumbria College of Art and Design.
