Cillian, his younger sisters Orla and Sile, and his younger brother Paidi were raised in Ballintemple, Cork by their mother who was a French teacher, and their father Brendan who worked at the Department of Education and Skills; most of Cillian’s relatives were also teachers. He became interested in music at a very early age, and was 10 years old when he started writing and singing songs. Cillian attended Presentation Brothers College (Catholic secondary school) from which he matriculated in 1994.

He became interested in acting when he appeared in his first school play, and was encouraged by his English teacher to pursue it as a career, however, at that time, he wanted to become a rock star. Cillian went on to sing and play the guitar in a couple of bands, together with his brother Paidi. They founded The Sons of Mr. Green Genes, and were offered a contract with Acid Jazz Records, which would require them to release five albums, however, Cillian refused because his brother was still attending high school. In 1996, Cillian enrolled at University College, Cork to study law, but quit not long after to focus on acting.

Cillian made his debut film appearance with his portrayal of Pat in the 1997 short drama “Quando”, and a couple of his following roles were in the 1998 crime movie “Sweety Barrett”, the 1999 comedy film “Sunburn” and the short movie “Eviction” the same year. He made his debut TV series appearance with his portrayal of the main character Paul Montague, in the 2001 romantic mini-series “The Way We Live Now”, then in 2003, Cillian was cast to play Bardolph in the hit historical adventure movie “Cold Mountain”. It was written and directed by Anthony Minghella, starred Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger, and follows a soldier who has just finished fighting in the American Civil War, and is on his way to meet his sweetheart in Cold Mountain, North Carolina; the movie won 21 awards, including an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Renee Zellweger), while it was nominated for 101 other awards.

In 2005, Cillian played Dr. Jonathan Crane – aka The Scarecrow – in the hit action crime movie “Batman Begins”, and reprised the role in the 2008 sequel “The Dark Knight”, and the 2012 sequel “The Dark Knight Rises”. He appeared in various other critically acclaimed movies during those years, including the 2010 action science fiction adventures “Inception” and “TRON: Legacy”.

Three of his most recent roles (besides “Peaky Blinders”) have been in the 2019 action thriller movie “Anna”, the 2020 horror science fiction film “A Quiet Place Part II” and the 2021 short movie “All of This Unreal Time”.

For his acting skills, Cillian has won nine of the 51 awards for which he has been nominated.

Music is still very important to him, and although he’s today not a member of any band, he occasionally plays with his friends, as well as solo.
