Born Steven Victor Tallarico on 26 March 1948, in Manhattan, New York City USA to Susan Ray and Victor A. Tallarico. Of Italian, German, English, Ukrainian, and African-American ancestry, he went to Roosevelt High School, however, he was expelled from school after he was caught with marijuana just before graduation day. He eventually graduated from Quintano’s School for Young Professionals.
During high school, Steven played drums in several bands and when he was 17 years old he attended a Rolling Stones concert, and after he received comments such as he looks like Mick Jagger, he thought of becoming a singer. He then saw Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton performing in the Jam Band and joined with them as lead singer, and the trio added Joey Kramer on drums and Brad Whitford as a rhythm guitarist, becoming Aerosmith.
