Lucy Deakins is a recognized American former actress and lawyer, perhaps best known for her portrayal as Milly in the film “The Boy Who Could Fly.”
Early life, family, and educational background
Lucy Helyn Deakins was born in New York, USA, on 18 December 1971, into a family of white ethnic heritage. Her parents are both professors – Roger Deakins taught Shakespeare at New York University, while her mother Alice taught English at William Paterson University in New Jersey.
Her siblings are brother Ned and sister Cat Deakins – Ned worked with AmeriCorps in Denver, fighting forest fires.
She attended Stuyvesant High School, and after graduation in 1988, enrolled at Harvard University, graduating with a degree in comparative religion in 1994. She subsequently finished law at the University of Washington School of Law in 2007.
She subsequently took a break from acting to travel throughout Europe. She lived in Port Townsend, Washington, and attended a boatbuilding school; then, she worked as an emergency medical technician (EMT).
She became a captain of the town’s Fire Academy, then in 2002 she went to Denver, Colorado, to study law.
Lucy began her acting career when she was 15 years old, debuting in the “The Boy Who Could Fly” film in 1986. The plot revolves around a girl dealing with her father’s death, moving to a new neighborhood and school, and an orphaned and autistic boy who is obsessed with flying.
Her performance in this movie earned her a nomination for Exceptional Performance by a Young Actress Starring in a Feature Film under Comedy or Drama category at Young Artist Award in 1986, and for Best Performance by a Younger Actor from Saturn Award in 1987.
She then appeared in four more films through 1994 – “Little Kinita,” “The Great Outdoors,” “Cheetah,” and “There Goes Baby.” She also portrayed roles in several television series from 1984 until 2002. Her most recent performance was in “Law and Order,” a police procedural and legal drama show, and she played the character of Lea Stanton on the “The Ring” episode in 2002.
She had also appeared on the same show in 1993, where she was cast as Julia Wood on the “Discord” episode. She retired from acting in 2002.
Career as a lawyer
Before settling as an attorney, she had other jobs, such as being a volunteer wildland firefighter and EMT from 1996 to 1998 in Port Townsend, Jefferson County, Washington. Then she became the Assistant County Emergency Manager at Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department in Port Hadlock for one year.
She became a paralegal in 1999, and in the same year transferred to Fulbright & Jaworski – now Norton Rose Fulbright – in New York, for seven years as a senior associate, working as a counsel focused on business litigation and security matters. When she moved in Denver, Colorado, in 2009, she continued her work with the same firm, which is one of the largest law firms in the world.
In 2015, Lucy left Norton Rose Fulbright and realized that she wanted to maintain her close connection to her clients, and founded Dunsing, Deakins & Galera, LLC, with Fred Dunsing and Joseph Galera.
Their firm specializes in appeals, family law, especially high-conflict child custody issues, and contract disputes for individuals and businesses. Dunsing focuses on family law matters, including divorce and child custody, and Galera specializes in criminal law.
Lucy has more than a decade of expertise representing clients in state and federal court. Her goal is to provide the most cost-effective solution to her client’s problems, whether settling a dispute or litigation.
Personal life: husband and children
Lucy married her long-time boyfriend, John Jay (J.J) Arnold, on 4 September 1999, after dating for some time. Their wedding was attended by their parents, close friends, and relatives.
They have a child named Mason Arnold, but no details of other children. Her husband is a sculptor and a portrait painter. They attended the same university where they met and graduated.
Who is John Jay Arnold?
J.J Arnold is his name as an artist. He is a member of the Arts Students League in Denver, and is known for his great oil paintings, as seen in the portrait of his daughter, Mason. He studied at The Arts Students League of New York under world famous artist Harvey Dinnerstein. There are a few details about JJ Arnold, but sources say that he’s auctioned many paintings in exhibitions and online auctions.
Lucy has light brown hair and hazel eyes. She is 5ft 6ins (1.71m) tall and weighs about 120lbs (54kgs).
Sources say that Lucy’s net worth is estimated at $500,000. She earns almost $70,000 as an average salary at a law firm including commission, bonus, and profit sharing as a lawyer, but probably more given her ownership/partnership situation. There are no details about the net worth of her husband.
