Born Richard Kevin Harrison on 22 March 1965, in Lexington, North Carolina USA, he’s the son of Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr., who is a US Navy veteran, and Joanne Rhue Harrison. He had an older sister, Sherry Joanne Harrison, who died when she was just six years old, an older brother Joseph Kent Harrison, and a younger brother Chris Harrison.
When he was two years old, the family moved to San Diego, California, as his father was transferred there. Growing up, Rick had health problems that confined him to bed for over eight months. During this time he started reading and in no time fell in love with books – “The Great Brain” by John D. Fitzgerald became his favorite.
He went to Taft Middle School, however, he dropped out of school in tenth grade, and the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the early ‘80s when the real estate business they operated fell apart.
Rick started the Gold & Silver Coin Shop with his father in 1981, on Las Vegas Boulevard South.

As Rick’s and the entire store’s popularity increased, he made an appearance in the show “Insomniac with Dave Attell” in 2003, but which wasn’t greeted with many positive reviews. However, five years later Brent Montgomery and Colby Gaines of Leftfield Pictures pitched a reality TV show idea that would include Rick to HBO, however, he didn’t like the idea; Nancy Dubuc of the History Channel changed the format, and added a few things, so eventually launching “Pawn Stars”. The original name was “Pawning History”, but it was then chosen on the play of words on ‘porn stars’ for marketing.
The show premiered in 2009, and since then, Rick and the rest of the shop and staff have turned into stars, and the series has been named one of the most popular reality TV shows.
Rick was married two times before Deanna; when he was 17 years old, his then-girlfriend Kim became pregnant with their child, but unfortunately suffered a miscarriage. The two eventually married in 1982, and their first child, Richard Corey Harrison was born on 27 April 1983, who is also a star of “Pawn Stars”, and the couple welcomed their second child, Adam, less than two years later.
