Shortly after finishing high school, Johnny moved to Los Angeles, California, looking for more acting opportunities. Two years later, Johnny appeared in the popular buddy cop action comedy “21 Jump Street”, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and which starred Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube. The movie is an adaptation of the 1988-91 TV series of the same name, centering on a pair of police officers who are tasked with infiltrating a high school, so that they can prevent the outbreak of a new synthetic drug. The film was one of the most commercially successful comedies of the 2010s, and was also listed as the sixth most illegally downloaded film of 2012.

In the same year, Johnny played the role of Brad, a secretly gay football player, in the award-winning coming-of-age comedy “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, which starred Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller.
