Born Daniel Joshua Gillies on 14 March 1976 in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, the son of New Zealand parents who at the time of his birth lived in Canada, with his parents he went to New Zealand when he was five.
The family eventually settled in Hamilton after living for some time in New Zealand’s southernmost city, Invercargill. He attended Hamilton Boys’ High School and though none of his family members had any connections with acting, he expressed his desire to become an actor, saying later that it was the only thing he was good at.
