The youngest of three children, Kevin has an older sister Virginia, and an older brother Donald Jr. He went to Henry Hudson Regional High School, but struggled academically scoring only B and C grades, however, he developed an interest in comedy sketch skits that resembled “Saturday Night Live”.
Following matriculation, he enrolled at The New School in New York City, however, he didn’t finish his studies, later entering Vancouver Film School, but leaving halfway through the course as he felt that he knew enough to become a filmmaker, and wanted to save money for his debut creation.
He became friends with Jason Mewes while working in the youth center, and they bonded over a mutual interest in comic books, and have been best friends ever since, with Kevin helping him with his heroin addiction.
He was inspired to become a filmmaker after seeing the movie “Slacker”, written, directed and produced by Richard Linklater, who also appeared in the film. Kevin wanted to do the same, and shot his films in his hometown, taking notes from films of such independent filmmakers as Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch and Hal Hartley among others. He was working at a convenience store in Leonardo, where he created his first film “Clerks”, raising $27,575 for his first film and casting his friends and colleagues in most roles in order to make the film happen.
“Clerks” premiered in 1994 at the Sundance Film Festival, starring Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson and Marilyn Ghigliotti, and became a total success, winning numerous awards and also garnering over $3 million at the box office. Since then, Kevin has created a number of successful films, including “Chasing Amy” (1997) – is one of his most popular films – then “Dogma” in 1999, and the “Jay and Silent Bob” franchise spanning 2001-2019, among other films.
Kevin is credited as the co-producer of the film “Good Will Hunting” after he brought the script he acquired from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to Harvey Weinstein, after a scuffle with Castle Rock studios.
Harvey and Miramax paid Castle Rock what was due for the script, and Affleck asked Kevin to direct the film, however he declined, saying that the film needed a better director, and that he directs only those films that he writes. The film was eventually directed by Gus Van Sant, and has become one of the most popular movies.
